PANGBOURNE

The members of Pangbourne Lodge No. 4381 purchased a major part of the property formerly known as Shooters Hill House for £1,100. Situated on the main Reading to Oxford road it overlooks one of the most picturesque stretches of the River Thames. The Temple was formerly the Billiard and Picture Room of the house and has a Minstrel’s Gallery with stained glass windows overlooking the lodge room. The arched ceiling and magnificent solid mahogany panelling add considerably to the beauty of the Temple.

The Temple was dedicated on 6th October, 1928 by R.W.Bro. H.R.H. Prince Arthur of Connaught, K.G., Prov.G.M. At the banquet which followed he said “It is not the first time I have visited Pangbourne. I spent some time here during my boyhood. I stayed not far from this building with my German governess. I had some excellent swimming in the river, and I recollect falling backwards out of a punt. The acquisition of this temple is an important thing, and I hope that it may augur well for the prosperity of the village”.

His hopes were fulfilled and Freemasonry has thrived there ever since as a result of the efforts of those early members of Pangbourne Lodge.
